As the Crossroads of the Catskills, Cairo is a rural community in Greene County, located about 35 miles South of Albany and ten miles West of the Hudson River. Formed as Canton on March 26, 1803 from parts of Coxsackie, Catskill, and Freehold, then re-named Cairo on April 6, 1808.

Proudly, the Cairo Historical Society will continue their "Town of Cairo Hometown Heroes Banners Program" this May. It's a living tribute to the servicemen and women from the Town of Cairo who served our country from the Revolutionary War to the present day. Each banner will honor a specific Town of Cairo former or present serviceman or woman and will include their picture, branch of service, and military conflict in which they served. The banners will be displayed from May to September. The banners will be hung on lampposts that line Main St. & Mountain Ave, as well as other streets to be named.
God Bless our servicemen and women and their families!
Thank you Volunteers!
It's been a great privilege & pleasure to witness the extraordinary amount of volunteerism in the Town of Cairo. Our sincerest appreciation to the many volunteers who donate time and money to improve & enhance our quality of life in Cairo. We have acknowledged Fran Wolf as Volunteer of the Year for 2013. Fran has selflessly and tirelessly volunteered as a Park Task Force member, a Cairo Library Board Trustee, a Human Resources consultant, and a potential director for a start-up non-profit organization for the Town. Fran has participated in many endeavors to beautify and fund-raise for the park, she's donated pictures of the park and labor for park work & activities, and offered time to other tasks as well. Thank you for your outstanding and exceptional volunteer service and commitment to
